Inside Our No-Spray Insect Garden: Plants, Pollinators, and Predators

Our backyard in North Texas is not really a vegetable garden, and calling it a flower garden misses the point too. It is an insect garden. Almost all of it grows in containers, nothing has ever been sprayed, and the plants are chosen for what they bring in. Pollinators are a big part of that, but so are the spiders, the assassin bugs, the predatory wasps, and the dragonflies. In 2026 we shifted the whole space away from vegetables and toward flowers, herbs, and habitat, and the result has been a working food web running a few feet from the back door.

It is worth saying up front that we are doing this in an HOA neighborhood. Roughly ten acres of houses where most backyards are grass and the front yards are a few landscaped beds, which is close to the least insect-friendly setup a piece of land can have. Ours is the odd one out.

Long term we want to own a piece of land again with no restrictions, where we can do real permaculture, let leaf litter stay where it falls, build brush piles, and expand the whole system without worrying about what it looks like from the street. The containers are staying either way. We just want more of them, and more room to build habitat around them.

But we are not waiting on that, and neither should you. Fourteen butterfly species, six kinds of orb weavers, all kinds of bees, and a predator population dense enough that we have taken about four mosquito bites all summer, all of it happened inside HOA limits, in containers, on a lot surrounded by lawn.

Quick Answer: What Is an Insect Garden?

An insect garden is a garden planted to support the widest possible range of insects and arthropods, not just bees and butterflies. It combines nectar plants for pollinators, host plants for caterpillars, and undisturbed habitat for predators like spiders, assassin bugs, dragonflies, lady beetles, lacewings, hover flies, and hunting wasps. The core structure looks like this:

  • Layered bloom: trees, shrubs, perennials, annuals, and flowering herbs so something is always in flower
  • Host plants, not just nectar: dill, fennel, parsley, milkweed, and passion vine feed the larval stage
  • Small flowers on purpose: herb umbels feed hover flies and beneficial wasps that larger blooms do not
  • No sprays of any kind: including organic and homemade ones, since predators are killed by the same products as pests
  • Shelter as well as food: webs, stems, leaf litter, and even a stack of pallets give insects somewhere to pupate, hide, and overwinter
  • Tolerance for damage: pests have to exist for predators to show up and stay

The Four Jobs Every Insect in a Garden Is Doing

Before the plant list, it helps to have a lens for all of it, because "good bug, bad bug" is not how any of this actually works. Nearly every insect and arthropod out here is doing at least one of four jobs, and most are doing more than one:

  • Pollination. Moving pollen so plants set seed and fruit. Bees get the credit, but flies, beetles, wasps, moths, and butterflies all move pollen too.
  • Pest control. Eating or parasitizing the insects that damage plants. This is mostly done by things people cannot identify, and frequently by the larval stage rather than the adult.
  • Decomposition and soil work. Breaking down dead plant material, wood, and waste back into something roots can use, and moving air and water through soil.
  • Being food. This is the one everybody skips. An insect that gets eaten is not a failure of the system, it is the system. Caterpillars feed nesting birds. Aphids feed hover fly larvae. Cicadas feed everything. A garden with nothing worth eating in it has nothing living in it.

The rest of this post is organized around that. Every insect we list, we try to answer the same question: what is it actually doing out here?

The Setup: Containers, Two No-Till Patches, and Nothing Sprayed

The garden sits in Hunt County, North Texas, in USDA zone 8a/8b. The core is 19 twenty-five-gallon planters, two 45-gallon planters, an assortment of 10 and 15 gallon containers and fabric grow bags, and two patches mapped straight into the existing lawn.

Her videos are the main body of work: educational, funny, and genuinely beautiful pieces about the insects she finds out here, built around macro footage, plus stills. Most of the observations in this post are hers, logged across a full season. Part of the reason the garden was rebuilt around insects in the first place was the content. Why We Grow in Containers

Container growing solves a specific set of problems, and it solves them the same way for habitat plants as it does for vegetables. University extension programs point to the same advantages: containers work when space is limited, when native soil is poor, and when you want direct control over growing conditions. Washington State University Extension notes that large containers also make more efficient use of space and act as a heat reservoir, which matters in a Texas summer.

What containers actually give us:

  • Soil we chose. North Texas clay is not what most habitat perennials want. In a container, we build the mix.
  • Drainage we control. Every container drains freely. That matters more than most people realize, and it comes back up in the mosquito section below.
  • No tilling. The soil biology in each pot is left alone year after year. That protects the ground-level workforce: rove beetles hunting fungus gnat larvae, ground beetles hunting at night, the fungal networks doing decomposition, and the ground-nesting native bees that need undisturbed soil to raise a generation.
  • Mobility. We can rearrange the entire garden when we want to, move plants for shelter when weather turns, and it is far easier to feed one specific plant without treating everything else the same way.
  • Contained spread. Mint, sorrel, and anything else with ambition stays where we put it.
  • Companion planting by pot. Several of our 25-gallon planters hold three or four species together, which stacks bloom times and puts different prey insects within inches of each other. Predators concentrate where the food is dense, so a mixed pot works harder than three separate ones.

Where the Container Setup Is Headed

We are consolidating. The direction we are moving is toward primarily 25-gallon down to 10-gallon containers and away from the scattered smaller pots and some of the pallets that filled in around them. Bigger containers hold moisture longer, buffer root temperature better through a Texas summer, and let us put three or four species together instead of one plant per pot.

The Pallet Stack Stays on Purpose

We are clearing out a lot of the pallets, but one stack is staying, and it is staying for the insects.

Flowers only solve half the problem. Nectar and pollen are food, but almost every insect in this garden also needs somewhere to be when it is not feeding: a place to pupate, a place to shelter through the heat of the day, a place to overwinter, a place to build a retreat. A stack of pallets is nothing but gaps, undersides, dark corners, and rough wood, which is exactly that.

What actually uses it: caterpillars that have finished eating and wandered off the host plant looking for a protected spot to form a chrysalis, which is why they "disappear" and people assume something ate them. Moths sheltering in the gaps during daylight. Wood-boring beetle larvae in the rotting slats, and the predatory beetle larvae that hunt them. Spiders building retreats in the corners, where they intercept anything crawling through.

That includes black widows, and we are deliberate about it. Widows want dark, enclosed spaces with a lip or an overhang to build against, which is exactly why they turn up under pot rims and along the underside of anything with an edge. We do not kill them. When one shows up somewhere we are working with our hands every day, it gets carefully relocated, and the pallet stack gives it somewhere to be. Knowing what a spider is looking for tells you both where to check and where to move it.

The Two In-Ground Patches

Two areas went in the ground with no bed prep at all. We laid garden edging to outline the shape, threw seed into the existing grass, and covered it with a thin layer of soil.

  • The sunflower patch, roughly 6 to 7 feet long by 2 to 3 feet wide, planted with Sunspot and Mammoth Grey Stripe sunflowers with cosmos mixed in. The Mammoth never got anywhere near mammoth-sized. Sunflower heads are a pollen buffet for native bees, and the seed feeds birds straight off the stalk if you leave the heads standing.
  • The fun patch, planted with Big Max pumpkin, Jack-o-Lantern pumpkin, Sugar Baby watermelon, and sweet corn. Mostly for fun, but cucurbit blossoms are one of the highest-value pollinator resources you can plant. They open early, hold a lot of pollen, and pull squash bees and bumble bees hard.

The sunflowers are dying back now, and that patch is getting reworked rather than replanted to sunflowers. The plan is zinnias, cilantro, and possibly dill in that space, which trades a short intense bloom for a long one, adds umbel flowers for the small beneficial insects, and puts in a swallowtail host plant.

Three more sunflower patches and two cilantro patches came up in-ground on their own this year, seeded by last year's garden. We left all of them.

The Trees and Woody Shrubs

The woody layer is the backbone. It blooms longer, holds far more insect biomass than anything annual, and gives predators somewhere permanent to live. Every one of these grows in a container.

Vitex, two trees (Texas Lilac type, Vitex agnus-castus), 25 gallons each. The single biggest draw in the garden, not close. Purple flower spikes worked mostly by bumble bees, butterflies, and other native pollinators rather than honey bees. Both trees are two to three times larger than last year. Because it is a tree, it does something the flower beds cannot: it holds a standing population of insects all season in one place, which is why the predators concentrate on it. It is also one of the two plants pulling in our hairstreaks and Queens, which we get into below.

White butterfly bush (Buddleja davidii), 25 gallons. The classic butterfly nectar shrub, and it earns the name. Long panicles of small flowers make it easy for a butterfly to work dozens of blooms without flying, which is efficient feeding for an insect with a very small fuel tank.

Flame acanthus, the hummingbird bush, 25 gallons. Narrow red tubular flowers that only long-tongued visitors can reach, which means hummingbirds and certain moths get a food source nothing else is competing for. Heat tolerant enough to keep flowering when a lot of the garden is sulking in August, which matters because late summer is when nectar gets scarce.

Esperanza, or yellow bells (Tecoma stans), 25 gallons. We call it the Tecobells. Big clusters of yellow trumpet flowers that carry through the worst of a Texas summer, filling the same late-heat nectar gap as the flame acanthus.

Variegated pink lemon tree, mature, 25 gallons. Grown for the fruit, but it is also a potential nursery. Giant swallowtails (Papilio cresphontes) lay on citrus and rue family plants, and we have had adult giant swallowtails in the garden this season. We have not found caterpillars on the lemon tree yet, so we are watching rather than claiming it. The blossoms are worth planting a citrus for on their own, since they pull bumble bees and even monarchs in early season.

Red skin peach, 25 gallons. Early spring bloom, which matters more than the fruit does. Native bees emerging in early spring have almost nothing to eat, and a fruit tree in bloom can be the difference between a queen bumble bee establishing a colony that year or not.

Lemon eucalyptus bush, 10 gallon. Dense foliage makes it good ambush cover, which is where the green lynx spider set up. Lemon eucalyptus oil is a known ingredient in natural insect repellents, which is a fun coincidence given the mosquito section below, though we are not claiming the plant itself repels anything.

Candle tree (Parmentiera cereifera), its own pot. The tropical Panama candle tree, grown as a curiosity. It is distinctive for cauliflory, meaning the waxy candle-shaped fruit and flowers form directly on the trunk and older branches rather than out on new growth. It is not the Senna alata candle bush, so there is no sulphur butterfly host plant angle here. We have not documented a specific insect draw on ours, so we are not inventing one.

The Pollinator Containers

Several 25-gallon planters hold multiple species together, which stacks bloom times and concentrates prey.

  • The mixed pollinator bed (25 gallon): spotted bee balm (Monarda punctata), rock rose, yarrow (Achillea millefolium), and butterfly weed (Asclepias tuberosa). The yarrow matters more than it looks like it should. Its flat clusters of tiny flowers are a landing platform for insects with short mouthparts, which is most of the small beneficial wasps and hover flies. Big showy blooms exclude them. Yarrow feeds them.
  • Zinnia, 'Hello Yellow' butterfly weed, and cosmos (25 gallon). Three heavy nectar producers plus a native milkweed host plant in one pot, so adults and caterpillars are fed in the same footprint.
  • Russian sage (Salvia yangii) with butterfly weed starts (25 gallon). Russian sage blooms for months and is drought proof once established, which makes it dependable nectar in the stretch when a lot of things quit.
  • Gregg's blue mist (Conoclinium greggii) with dill (25 gallon). Gregg's blue mist, also called mistflower, is one of the most reliable butterfly plants we grow, and putting dill in the same container means a female swallowtail can nectar and lay eggs without leaving the pot.

Spotted Bee Balm

Nicknamed "beebop" around here. The flowers are strange, stacked whorls that look more like a sculpture than a bloom, and they pull in insects most flowers do not, which is exactly the point. The bee balms produce shallow, accessible nectar that small native bees and short-tongued wasps can actually reach, so they feed the part of the pollinator community that the big showy garden-center flowers leave out. This is also where the delta flower scarab and the common thread-waisted wasp turned up. If we had to name one underrated plant family for an insect garden, it would be this one.

Echinacea

Two containers of Cheyenne Spirit Everbloom coneflower in 10 gallon containers. Coneflowers do two jobs. The wide flat center gives dozens of insects a stable platform to work, which is why sweat bees, hover flies, and an ambushing white crab spider all end up on the same bloom. Then if you leave the spent heads standing into fall, the seed feeds finches. Deadheading gets you more flowers, leaving them gets you birds, so we do some of each.

Zinnias

Giant zinnias in a 10 gallon container plus zinnias mixed into the pollinator pots. Zinnias are basically a landing pad for anything with wings. They are fast from seed, they bloom all season, and the flat open face lets a butterfly perch and feed at the same time, which a lot of flowers do not allow. Of the fourteen butterfly species we have logged this year, the majority have been photographed on zinnias.

They also serve a specific job for us. When a butterfly emerges from its chrysalis, we move it onto the zinnias to dry its wings for a few hours, because the blooms are wide enough to grip and there are enough other flowers nearby that predators are not concentrated on any one of them.

Mistflower and Late-Season Nectar

The tail end of the year is where most gardens fall apart, and it is also when monarchs and queens are moving through and native bees are producing the generation that has to survive winter. Late nectar is not decoration, it is the fuel for both.

  • Gregg's blue mist, or mistflower (Conoclinium greggii). Pound for pound the highest-value butterfly plant in our garden. The fuzzy blue flower clusters pull in Queens and hairstreaks specifically, and it keeps producing when a lot of the garden has quit.
  • Fall aster (Symphyotrichum oblongifolium). Native, and one of the most valuable late-season nectar plants there is. It flushes purple in fall exactly when migrating monarchs need to refuel.
  • Mexican bush sage (Salvia leucantha), 25 gallon. Velvety purple and white flower spikes worked hard by bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds well into fall.

French Lavender

Lavandula dentata, not English lavender. This matters in Texas. English lavender tends to rot out in our humidity, while French lavender handles the heat and the wet air far better. Bees work the flower spikes hard, and because it flowers over a long window it fills gaps between the bigger bloom pushes.

Sunflowers

A sunflower in a 10 gallon container plus the in-ground patch plus three volunteer patches. Sunflowers are Mandi's favorite flower, and a good number of the ones out here started as wild seed heads collected on motorcycle rides. Ecologically they punch above their weight: a single head is hundreds of individual flowers, so it is a dense pollen source, and the seed feeds birds afterward. They also host the sunflower headclipping weevil (Haplorhynchites aeneus), which girdles the stem right below the bud. It is a pest by definition, and it is also one more prey item holding predators on the property.

Passion Vine

A fruiting passion vine (Passiflora sp.) in a 10 gallon container, and it is the reason the Gulf fritillaries stay instead of just passing through. Passion vine is their larval host, and host plants are the multiplier in a garden like this. A nectar plant feeds the butterflies that already exist. A host plant makes more of them. We have adults working the garden regularly and have not yet documented caterpillars on the vine, so that last step is something we are watching rather than claiming.

The Wildflower Mixes

Four containers of Ferry-Morse Sunny Meadow wildflower mix. This is the cheapest insect habitat in the garden by a wide margin, and it works because of variety rather than any single species. Different flower shapes serve different mouthparts, so a mixed planting feeds a much broader slice of the insect community than the same square footage of one plant.

What comes up out of that mix includes calendula, bachelor's button, Siberian and English wallflower, shasta daisy, plains coreopsis, cosmos, Chinese forget-me-not, larkspur, sweet William, foxglove, purple coneflower, California poppy, baby's breath, blue flax, scarlet flax, wild lupine, Shirley poppies, and black-eyed Susan.

Two of those have already paid off directly. The calendula is where we found the wavy-lined emerald moth caterpillar, which sticks flower petals to its own back with silk for camouflage and swaps them out as they wilt. A yellow crab spider was hunting on the same plant, which is the food web compressed onto one bloom. The plains coreopsis produced the flower jewel beetle (Acmaeodera sp.), one of the pollen-feeding beetles that pollinates as a side effect of eating.

All of our seed comes from True Leaf Market, which carries garden and flower seed alongside microgreen seed.

Herbs That Do Double Duty

The herb containers are the most productive square footage in the whole garden, and not because of what we harvest.

Dill and Bronze Fennel

We grow dill in a dedicated 25-gallon planter and mixed into other containers, and we grow bronze fennel (Foeniculum vulgare 'Purpureum') alongside it. Both are carrot family, which is the only family black swallowtails will lay on, so these two plants are the reason we have butterflies at all rather than just butterfly visitors. The dill is deliberately allowed to bolt a few feet from the back door. Mandi seeded that planter with dill the same way she would seed a tray of microgreens, and it has now produced multiple generations. Letting them flower is the second job, and it is the one people skip. Umbels are flat clusters of tiny shallow flowers, which is the only kind of flower most parasitoid wasps and hover flies can feed from. Those adults are the ones that go lay eggs on your aphids and caterpillar pests. A bolted dill plant is, functionally, a feeding station for your pest control.

Cilantro

Self-seeded and left to flower for the same reason. Gray hairstreaks work the flowers and honey bees groom on the leaves. Striped cucumber beetles turn up on the seed heads, which is a real pest, and it is also exactly what we filmed a banded garden spider wrapping up. The cilantro is both a nectar source and a bait station.

Basil

Thai and cinnamon basil in a 25-gallon planter plus eight more Thai basil plants spread across the smaller containers. We deliberately let some of them go to flower and keep others pinched for the kitchen. Flowering basil is a heavy bee draw and a real butterfly stop, and it is one of the easiest additions to make to a garden you already have.

Sage, Thyme, Rosemary, and the Rest

  • Sage, large pot. This is where the leafcutter bee and sweat bee turned up. Sage's tubular flowers suit long-tongued bees that shallow flowers do not serve.
  • German thyme, large pot. Tiny flowers in quantity, which is exactly what tiny beneficial insects need. Thyme also mats over the soil surface and gives ground-level hunters cover.
  • Rosemary, 10 to 15 gallon. One of the earliest bloomers here, which makes it a critical first food source for bees coming out of winter.
  • Parsley, regular pot. Another carrot family swallowtail host, and another umbel producer if you let it bolt in its second year.
  • Spearmint, regular pot, kept contained on purpose. Mint flowers are a genuine bee magnet, which is the argument for growing it despite how it behaves.
  • Red-veined sorrel (Rumex sanguineus), regular pot.
  • Green onions, four multiplying bunching type plants. Allium flowers are spherical clusters of hundreds of small blooms and pull in a wide range of small pollinators if you let one go to flower.

Milkweed

Butterfly weed (Asclepias tuberosa), including the 'Hello Yellow' cultivar, is the milkweed in our garden. It is native, it is the host plant for both monarchs and queens, and it spreads on its own by seeding, which is how it ended up across three different containers without us planting it three times.

Milkweed is worth understanding as an entire small ecosystem rather than one plant. Monarch and queen caterpillars eat the leaves and pull the plant's cardenolide toxins into their own bodies as defense. The flowers are a strong nectar source for bees, wasps, and butterflies generally. Milkweed aphids colonize the new growth, which brings in hover flies, lacewings, and parasitoid wasps, which then stay in the garden and work everything else. And a whole specialist cast of milkweed bugs and beetles feeds on the seeds and stems without doing meaningful damage. One plant supports a dozen relationships.

Native milkweed is worth the patience it takes. It is slower to establish than a lot of nursery perennials because it puts its early energy into a deep taproot, which is also what makes it drought tolerant once it settles in. That taproot is why butterfly weed does not love being moved, so we plant it where we want it and leave it there.

The Cherry Tomatoes

The food crops did not disappear when the garden shifted to insects. They just stopped being the point. We have eight cherry tomato plants spread across a 25 gallon planter, a 45 gallon planter with two in it, and several smaller containers. At least three are rainbow cherry and the rest are red cherry, though we stopped tracking which is which.

Tomatoes are an insect story too. Tomato flowers hold their pollen inside sealed anthers and only release it to buzz pollination, meaning a bee has to grip the flower and vibrate its flight muscles at the right frequency to shake it loose. Honey bees cannot do it. Bumble bees and several native species can. If you have ever had tomato flowers drop without setting fruit, the missing ingredient is often a bee, not a fertilizer, and that is a direct argument for planting the rest of the garden the way we have.

Everything else we eat regularly is grown indoors under lights. Leafy greens, kitchen herbs, and microgreens all moved to indoor hydroponics, which is what freed up the outdoor space to become habitat in the first place. We covered that side of it in How to Grow Your Own Food Indoors.

The Volunteers We Let Stay

Once you have grown a garden for a couple of seasons, you start recognizing last year's plants coming up on their own all over the yard. Watch something go from seedling to full grown one year and your brain just knows it on sight the next.

Our 2026 volunteers from the 2025 garden: milkweed, cilantro, basil, sunflowers, and zinnias. Two containers are now dedicated to them entirely. Volunteers are worth more than they look, because a plant that seeded itself is already suited to the spot it chose, and it comes up on its own schedule rather than ours, which spreads bloom out across a wider window.

The rule of thumb is simple. Pot the milkweed back up so it does not get mowed over. Leave most of the rest to grow where it landed unless it is somewhere genuinely awkward.

How We Keep It Blooming

Five practices do most of the work here.

Deadheading. Spent blooms get removed from the plants that respond to it, mainly zinnias, cosmos, and echinacea. Taking the finished flowers off keeps a plant pushing new blooms instead of putting its energy into seed, which means more nectar on the table for longer.

The vitex second-bloom trim. This is the highest-leverage thing we do all season. As soon as the vitex finishes its first spring bloom, every spent flower spike comes off immediately. That prompt hard cutback pushes a strong second summer bloom on the biggest insect draw in the garden, which effectively doubles the season of the single most productive plant we own.

Feeding the containers. Container plants run out of what the pot came with, so we do feed them, and we use dry granular fertilizers worked into the soil surface alongside liquid feeding. Dry fertilizer is the practical choice at this scale. It releases over weeks instead of days, it does not have to be mixed and hauled every time, and with containers you can feed one specific plant without pushing growth on everything around it. The fertilizers and grow bags we use are in our Garden Fertilizers & Fabric Grow Bags list. Fertilizer feeds plants, not insects, and it is not a pest control product. Nothing sprayed for pests goes on anything out here.

Seed saving. We save seed off just about anything that will set it: zinnias, cosmos, echinacea, vitex, cilantro, dill, fennel, basil, and milkweed. It is the cheapest way to expand habitat year over year.

Letting things self-seed. Deadheading and seed saving pull in opposite directions, so we split the difference. Some blooms get cut, some get left to set seed and drop where they stand.

We start a lot of the deliberate plantings indoors first. Our 128-cell plug trays are what we use for garden seedlings before they go out to the containers.

What We Are Adding Next

Four plants are sitting in nursery pots waiting on containers right now:

  • Florence fennel (Foeniculum vulgare var. azoricum). Another carrot family swallowtail host, and another umbel producer to feed parasitoid wasps and hover flies.
  • Holy basil, or tulsi (Ocimum tenuiflorum). A flowering basil that becomes a heavy bee magnet once it blooms and keeps blooming through heat that shuts other things down.
  • Globe amaranth (Gomphrena globosa). Extremely heat and drought tolerant, and it holds nectar through the hottest weeks when butterflies have the fewest options.
  • Granada Gold coneflower (Echinacea x hybrida 'Granada Gold'). Same broad platform and late seed head as the Cheyenne Spirit plants.

For 2027 the seed order goes native and milkweed-forward: green milkweed (Asclepias viridis), swamp rose milkweed (Asclepias incarnata), and showy milkweed (Asclepias speciosa), plus a native Texas wildflower mix with bluebonnet, Indian blanket, huisache daisy, purple prairie clover, prairie coneflower, plains and lanceleaf coreopsis, lemon beebalm, black-eyed Susan, and Mexican hat.

The native push is deliberate. Native plants and native insects evolved alongside each other, so a native planting generally supports more specialist species than an equivalent area of imported ornamentals. Green milkweed is the safest of the three milkweeds for local native framing, since it already grows wild nearby, and more milkweed means more monarchs and queens rather than just more visitors. Purple prairie clover is a legume, which is the plant family the sulphur butterflies lay on, so it is one of the few things on that list that could convert a sulphur visitor into a resident. Lemon beebalm should do what the spotted bee balm already does, which is pull in insects nothing else in the garden reaches.

The Fourteen Butterflies, and What Brought Each One In

Fourteen butterfly species have turned up in this container garden so far this year. Not a field, not acreage. Containers on a suburban lot in North Texas.

Butterflies are moderate pollinators compared to bees. They perch high on their legs and contact less pollen per visit. What they do well is distance: they travel much further between plants than a bee will, so they move genetic material across a far wider area. And every one of them is also part of the food web in both directions, feeding as an adult while its caterpillars feed birds, wasps, and spiders.

Here is the list, and more importantly, what pulled each one in.

The Milkweed Group

Monarch (Danaus plexippus). The one everybody plants for. Milkweed is the only thing monarch caterpillars will eat, and the toxins they pull out of it stay in the adult, which is why birds learn to leave them alone. One of ours emerged with wings that did not dry quite right, which happens and is worth showing rather than hiding. A butterfly needs to hang undisturbed with room to expand its wings in the first hours after emerging, and if it gets knocked, crowded, or has nothing to grip, the wings set wrong permanently. Brought in by: butterfly weed as the host, zinnias and mistflower for nectar.

Queen (Danaus gilippus). Spotted this one today, and it is the closest thing we have to a milkweed-garden trophy. Queens are the monarch's darker cousin, a deeper chestnut brown with white speckling across the forewings and without the heavy black vein pattern. They use the same milkweed hosts and carry the same chemical defense, and both benefit from the shared warning coloration. Queens are more of a southern species than monarchs, so North Texas is good territory for them. Brought in by: mistflower above all. Queens are strongly drawn to plants in that group, and ours is what put one in the garden.

The Swallowtails

Eastern black swallowtail (Papilio polyxenes), both male and female. Our resident species, breeding on the dill and bronze fennel a few feet from the back door. The sexes look different enough to confuse people: males have a bold yellow band across the hindwings with only a little blue, while females have a much smaller yellow band and a broad wash of iridescent blue in its place. The female is a rough mimic of the toxic pipevine swallowtail, which buys her protection she has not actually earned. Brought in by: dill, bronze fennel, and parsley as hosts, zinnias for nectar.

Giant swallowtail (Papilio cresphontes). The largest butterfly in North America, and unmistakable in flight. Its caterpillar is one of the best-camouflaged insects anywhere, resembling a fresh bird dropping, and like all swallowtail caterpillars it can evert an orange osmeterium when threatened. Citrus growers call the larvae "orange dogs," and a mature tree can carry a few with no real harm. Brought in by: the variegated pink lemon tree as a potential host, zinnias and vitex for nectar.

Pipevine swallowtail (Battus philenor). Iridescent blue-black, and genuinely toxic. Its caterpillars feed on pipevine (Aristolochia) and sequester the plant's aristolochic acids, which makes the adult unpalatable enough that at least half a dozen other butterfly species have evolved to look like it. That includes our female black swallowtails, plus the dark form of the eastern tiger swallowtail, the red-spotted purple, and the spicebush swallowtail. When you see a pipevine swallowtail, you are looking at the original that a whole mimicry complex is copying. Brought in by: nectar only. We do not grow pipevine, so this one is a visitor rather than a resident, and pipevine is now on the shortlist.

The Sulphurs

Cloudless sulphur (Phoebis sennae), male and female. Large bright yellow butterflies that seem to be permanently in a hurry, and one of the more common large sulphurs across Texas. Males are typically a clean solid lemon yellow. Females tend to run more golden or slightly orange-tinged with a small dark spot on the forewing and a faint dark border. They are strong fliers and cover ground, and they move a lot of pollen between distant plantings for exactly that reason.

ID flag: sulphurs are the group we are least confident on. These are our best call, not a confirmed identification, and the family has several look-alikes that overlap in Texas. If you know sulphurs and we have them wrong, tell us. Getting corrected publicly is better than being wrong quietly. Brought in by: zinnias and mistflower for nectar. Their host plants are legumes in the senna and partridge pea group, which we do not currently grow, so these are nectar visitors.

The Hairstreaks

Gray hairstreak (Strymon melinus). Small, gray, with orange-capped spots near the tail and thin hairlike tails on the hindwings. Those tails plus the eyespot form a false head, and the butterfly rubs its hindwings together while perched to make the fake antennae move. A bird strikes the wrong end and the butterfly leaves with a notch out of its wing instead of a missing head. It is one of the more generalist caterpillars out there, feeding on a wide range of plants. Brought in by: flowering cilantro, mistflower, and vitex.

Red-banded hairstreak (Calycopis cecrops). Same false-head trick, with a bold red-orange band running across the underside of the wings. Its caterpillars do something unusual and genuinely useful: rather than eating living foliage, they feed largely on fallen dead leaves, particularly sumac and wax myrtle. That makes them one of the few butterflies contributing to decomposition, and it is one more reason not to rake and bag every leaf. Brought in by: mistflower and vitex for nectar, plus leaf litter left where it fell.

The Rest

Gulf fritillary (Agraulis vanillae). Bright orange above, with brilliant elongated silver spots on the underside that flash when it moves. Its caterpillars are spiny, orange, and feed exclusively on passionflower vines, and they sequester defensive compounds from the plant the same way monarchs do with milkweed. This is a species you keep by planting the host, not by planting nectar. Brought in by: the passion vine, plus zinnias for nectar.

American lady (Vanessa virginiensis). Orange and black above, with two large eyespots on the underside of the hindwing that distinguish it from the painted lady's four smaller ones. Caterpillars feed on plants in the everlasting group, including pussytoes and cudweed, and the caterpillar builds a shelter by webbing leaves together with silk. Strong migratory flier, so it moves pollen over serious distances. Brought in by: zinnias and mistflower for nectar.

Fiery skipper (Hylephila phyleus). Small, fast, and orange, with the stocky body and hooked antennae that mark the skippers. Skippers are worth knowing because their thick bodies and fuzzy scales make them better pollen carriers than their size suggests. The caterpillars feed on grasses, which means an ordinary lawn is a host plant, and a lawn that is not treated with anything is a host plant that works. Brought in by: zinnias, plus the untreated lawn.

Cabbage white (Pieris rapae). The one people are least excited to see, since the caterpillars feed on brassicas. Ours are non-native and widespread, and worth reframing: this is one of the earliest butterflies flying in spring and one of the last in fall, so it pollinates during windows when almost nothing else is out. We grow our brassicas indoors as microgreens, so the outdoor damage is close to zero. Brought in by: vitex, zinnias, and general nectar.

What the Fourteen Have in Common

Look at the "brought in by" line on each of those and the pattern is obvious. Zinnias appear on almost every one. Mistflower and vitex account for most of the rest, particularly the Queens and hairstreaks. And the species we actually keep, rather than briefly host, are the ones whose caterpillar host plant is growing here: milkweed for monarchs and queens, dill and fennel for the black swallowtails, passion vine for the Gulf fritillaries.

Nectar brings butterflies to look. Host plants make them stay. If you only take one thing from this section, take that.

Spiders: The Largest Predator Group in Any Garden

Spiders are the most underrated animals in a backyard garden, and it is not close. Researchers Martin Nyffeler and Klaus Birkhofer estimated that the world's spiders kill somewhere between 400 and 800 million tons of prey every year, with more than 90 percent of that being insects and springtails. For scale, the entire human population eats roughly 400 million tons of meat and fish annually. Spiders are also food themselves, forming part of the diet of an estimated 3,000 to 5,000 bird species.

The reason a mix of spider types matters more than a lot of any one type is coverage. Different hunting strategies cover different parts of the garden, and between them they leave very little uncovered.

Orb Weavers, the Aerial Net

Six different orb weaver types have turned up here, including a western spotted orbweaver over the compost bin, a banded garden spider, and a star-bellied orb weaver.

What they do: orb weavers are the only predators in the garden that hunt empty air. Every night they rebuild a web across a flight path and intercept whatever flies into it, which means mosquitoes, gnats, midges, moths, flies, leafhoppers, and beetles that no ground or leaf predator will ever reach. Six types means six different web heights, orientations, and locations, so between them they are filtering the airspace at multiple levels.

They also run a genuinely efficient operation. Most orb weavers take the whole web down each morning and eat the silk to recycle the protein, then rebuild fresh. Mandi filmed the banded garden spider wrapping a striped cucumber beetle, which is one of the few real pests out here, and that clip is the entire pest control program in about fifteen seconds.

They do not all sit out in the open, either. Some build a silk retreat off to the side of the web, tucked inside a curled leaf, and wait there with a foot on a signal line until something hits.

Jumping Spiders, the Leaf Surface Patrol

The bold jumping spider (Phidippus audax) and the familiar jumping spider (Platycryptus undatus) both hunt without webs at all.

What they do: jumping spiders walk the plants in daylight, stalking and pouncing with excellent eyesight doing the aiming. That puts them exactly where webs cannot go, on the leaf and stem surfaces where aphids, small caterpillars, leafhoppers, and flies actually live. They cover the daytime leaf level while the orb weavers cover the night airspace. The familiar jumping spider works the flat vertical surfaces, so fences, containers, and the pallet stack, which is another slice of territory nothing else patrols.

They also build small silk retreats inside curled leaves to rest and molt, which is one more reason not to strip every damaged leaf off a plant.

Crab Spiders and the Green Lynx, the Flower Ambush

Crab spiders (Mecaphesa sp. and other Thomisidae) and the green lynx spider (Peucetia viridans) both hunt from the flowers themselves.

What they do: they sit motionless on a bloom and take whatever lands. That includes flower-feeding pest insects and, importantly, moths coming in to nectar, which is how a flower ambush predator ends up intercepting the adult stage of caterpillar pests before it lays eggs. The green lynx in particular is well documented in agricultural settings taking pest moths and caterpillars.

We will be honest about the tradeoff, because it is real: flower ambush predators also take bees and butterflies. That is not a flaw to be corrected, it is what a food web looks like. The answer is volume. Plant enough blooms that no single flower is a bottleneck, and the losses stay statistically irrelevant while the predation on pests keeps happening.

Wolf Spiders, the Ground Shift

What they do: wolf spiders hunt at soil level, mostly at night, without webs. They work the surface under and around the containers and take crickets, roaches, earwigs, cutworms, and the soil-dwelling larvae that chew through seedlings at the base. That is the layer everything else in this list ignores. A garden with no ground predators loses transplants overnight and never figures out why.

They are also devoted parents by spider standards. A female carries her egg sac attached to her spinnerets, then carries the spiderlings on her back after they hatch.

Southern Black Widow, the Cavity Specialist

We found a juvenile southern black widow (Latrodectus mactans) under a pot rim, banded in white, cream, and orange before it darkens to solid black with the red hourglass.

What it does: a widow is not a flower spider or a leaf spider. It builds a strong, irregular tangle web low to the ground inside dark enclosed spaces and waits for things to walk into it. That makes it the predator for a very specific slot: the crawling insects moving through cavities, under rims, along the base of containers, and through stacked material. Crickets, roaches, ground beetles, ants, and other ground crawlers are the bulk of the diet. Widow silk is also unusually strong, which is why they can hold prey that would tear through a lighter web.

They are also about as reclusive as a spider gets. A widow's entire strategy is to stay hidden and stay still, and bites almost always come from a person putting a hand or a body part directly against one without seeing it. That is a knowledge problem, not an aggression problem. Knowing they want dark enclosed spaces with a lip to build against tells you exactly where to look before reaching: under pot rims, inside stored containers, in the gaps of anything stacked.

So we do not kill them. When one sets up somewhere we are working with our hands every day, it gets carefully relocated to the pallet stack, where it can go on removing ground-level insects somewhere we are not putting our hands. Removing a predator does not remove the prey it was eating. It just leaves the job open.

Assassin Bugs, and Why We Have So Many

Assassin bugs are everywhere in this garden, primarily the green ones, and they are working every plant in it. They are one of the clearest signs of a garden that has not been sprayed, because generalist predators like this are among the first things a broad-spectrum product removes.

The green ones in Texas gardens are typically Zelus species, most commonly the leafhopper assassin bug (Zelus renardii). We have not pinned ours to species, so we are keeping the call at genus level. Texas A&M's Field Guide to Common Texas Insects lists it as roughly half an inch long, ranging from yellowish-green to brown, and their management recommendation for it is a single word: none. It is a beneficial insect.

What they do: assassin bugs are generalist ambush predators with a curved needle-like beak, called a rostrum, tucked under the head. They stalk slowly along stems and leaves, catch prey with their forelegs, pierce it, inject digestive enzymes, and consume the liquefied tissue. The prey list is essentially "whatever it can catch": leafhoppers, aphids, thrips, flies, small caterpillars, and beetles. The Texas A&M guide photographed one feeding on a cotton bollworm, which is a serious agricultural caterpillar pest.

Three things make them unusually valuable in a garden this size:

  • They hunt at every life stage. Unlike lady beetles or hover flies, where only one stage does the pest control, assassin bug nymphs hunt too. Every individual out there is working from the moment it can move.
  • Their forelegs are sticky. Zelus species produce a resinous secretion on their front legs that functions like flypaper, which is why they can hold prey larger and faster than themselves. It is the reason a slow-moving insect can catch a fly.
  • They stay without a pest outbreak. Broad diet and a decent lifespan mean they do not disappear when one prey species crashes. They just switch.

Two honest caveats. They are generalists, so they will occasionally take a bee or a small pollinator, same as the crab spiders. And they bite defensively if you grab one, hard enough that you will remember it, so this is a look-do-not-handle insect.

Dragonflies and the Aerial Predators

Dragonflies and damselflies hunt on the wing, and they are among the most effective aerial insect predators anywhere. Skimmers (family Libellulidae) are the most common ones here, and a damselfly has been photographed resting on the milkweed.

What they do: a dragonfly catches prey in flight using a basket formed by its legs, and its hunting success rate is among the highest measured for any predator. They take mosquitoes, gnats, midges, and small flies out of the air over the garden all day, which is the same airspace the orb weavers work at night. Between the two, that airspace is being filtered around the clock.

Their aquatic nymph stage is a predator too, hunting mosquito larvae and other small aquatic life before any of it ever emerges. Ours are almost certainly coming in from water sources nearby rather than breeding here, since we do not keep any standing water.

Worth being straight about: dragonflies genuinely eat mosquitoes, but mosquito control professionals are clear that they do not reliably crash mosquito populations on their own. They are one layer, not the whole thing.

Wasps Are Doing Pest Control You Never See

Wasps get treated as something to eliminate. The research says otherwise. A 2021 review in Biological Reviews compiled evidence from more than 500 studies and found that stinging wasps function as top insect predators, regulate populations of aphids and crop-eating caterpillars, and pollinate along the way. The review found records of wasps visiting 960 plant species, including 164 that depend on wasps entirely for pollination.

The solitary hunting wasps in particular do something no other predator here does. Instead of eating prey themselves, they paralyze it and seal it in a burrow as living food for one larva. That means every completed nest represents multiple pest insects permanently removed from the garden, and the female does it over and over for weeks.

  • Common thread-waisted wasp (Ammophila procera). Targeted caterpillar control. Females hunt caterpillars, paralyze them, and drag them into a ground burrow. Every burrow she provisions is caterpillars taken off your plants. Solitary and non-aggressive, with silver racing stripes on the thorax that separate it from relatives.
  • Great golden digger wasp (Sphex ichneumoneus). Grasshopper, katydid, and cricket control, which matters more in Texas than most places, since grasshoppers can strip a garden in a bad year. Females provision burrows with paralyzed orthopterans. Adults also sip nectar and pollinate while they are at it. Rarely stings people.
  • Cicada killer wasp (Sphecius speciosus). The big one people panic about. It is a solitary digger wasp, not a hornet. Females hunt cicadas to stock burrows, which is a real check on cicada numbers, and the burrowing itself moves and aerates soil. Males patrol and look intimidating and have no stinger at all.   • Mud daubers. Spider control, which is worth thinking about. Mud daubers stock their mud nests with paralyzed spiders, which makes them a predator of predators and part of what keeps any one group from running away with the garden. Solitary and famously mild-mannered.
  • Paper wasps. The heaviest caterpillar removal of the group. A paper wasp colony feeds chewed caterpillar to its larvae all summer, so a single nest can take a serious number of caterpillars off nearby plants. Adults also forage nectar on our blooms and pollinate incidentally. They are also part of the reason a caterpillar needs a defense like the orange osmeterium.

The pattern across almost all of them is the same. Solitary wasps are not defending a large colony, so they have very little reason to be aggressive toward a person standing three feet away with a camera. Mandi films them at close range constantly.

The Xerces Society makes the connecting point directly: pollen and nectar are supplemental food for many predators and parasitoids, which is why planting for pollinators and planting for natural enemies end up being the same job.

The Bees, and What Each One Actually Pollinates

"Save the bees" almost always means honey bees, which are a managed livestock species. The native bees are the ones doing most of the pollination in a garden like ours, and they do different jobs.

  • Sweat bees (family Halictidae, likely Halictus). Small native bees that work small flowers larger bees ignore, which covers a big share of our herb and wildflower blooms. Many are ground nesters, so undisturbed soil is a requirement, not a preference. That is one more reason we never till.
  • Leafcutter bees (Megachile sp.). Some of the most effective pollinators per visit of any bee. They carry dry pollen on a brush under the abdomen rather than packed wet on the legs, so it falls off easily onto the next flower. Honey bees are tidier and transfer less. The neat circles snipped out of leaves and petals are nest material, and the plant is not harmed. Solitary and non-aggressive.
  • Bumble bees (Bombus sp.). The buzz pollinators. They are the reason the tomatoes set fruit, and they work in cooler temperatures and lower light than honey bees will, which extends daily pollination hours on both ends. Also the primary workers on our vitex.
  • Honey bees (Apis mellifera). Generalist volume pollinators, out here grooming on the cilantro leaves and working most of what blooms.
  • Texas cuckoo bee. Likely genus Triepeolus, and we are keeping it at genus level. Cuckoo bees build nothing. They lay in other bees' nests, which sounds like a problem and is actually the best news on this list. A cleptoparasite cannot survive without a healthy standing population of its host bees, so finding one is direct evidence that our native solitary bee population is established rather than just passing through.

The Pest Control You Have to Look Closely to Find

Most of the actual pest control in a garden is happening at a scale people never inspect, and frequently in the larval stage of insects that look like nothing.

Hover Fly Larvae, the Biggest Story in Our Garden

Hover flies, also called flower flies (family Syrphidae), are all over the blooms as adults and are easy to mistake for small bees or wasps. They are neither. Hover flies have one pair of wings instead of two, and their eyes are a different shape and size once you get close. Several of ours are wasp mimics, which is precisely what that look is for.

What they do, in two completely separate jobs. The adults are pollinators, and in a lot of systems they are second only to bees for sheer visit volume. Then the larvae are among the most effective aphid predators in any garden. The Xerces Society notes that a single flower fly larva can consume as many as 50 aphids in a day. One insect, pollinating as an adult and doing pest control as a juvenile.

The larvae are small, legless, translucent, slightly sluglike, and nearly invisible against a green stem. Going plant to plant, we found them all over the garden on exactly the plants that had aphid colonies, including the milkweed. Most people who find one have no idea what they are looking at and wipe it off.

Their strategy is what makes the no-spray part matter. Adult hover flies feed on pollen and nectar, and females lay eggs directly in or beside aphid colonies so the larvae hatch onto their food supply. That means two things:

  • You need small, open, accessible flowers to hold the adults on the property. This is why the dill, fennel, cilantro, yarrow, and thyme matter as much as the showy blooms do.
  • You need to tolerate a few aphids so females have somewhere worth laying. A spray-clean plant gives a hover fly no reason to stop.

The Milkweed Aphids They Came For

The bright yellow aphids that coat milkweed new growth are oleander aphids (Aphis nerii). Illinois Extension notes that they are non-native and feed on plants in the dogbane family, which is why they show up on butterfly weed and oleander alike. They reproduce parthenogenetically, meaning there are no males and every individual is a female producing live female nymphs, which is why a colony explodes so fast.

Here is what makes them interesting rather than just annoying. Milkweed sap contains cardenolide glycosides, the same toxins that make monarch caterpillars unpalatable. Ohio State's BYGL explains that oleander aphids sequester those compounds into their own bodies as chemical defense, and that the bright yellow coloring is thought to be a warning signal. A milkweed aphid is not a soft target, it is a toxic one advertising itself. Hover fly larvae, lacewing larvae, and some lady beetles take them anyway.

And there is a role even the pest is playing. That aphid colony is what pulled the hover flies in and gave them a reason to stay. The pest is the prey base. Remove it entirely and the predators leave, which is why a sprayed garden has to be sprayed again every year.

The Milkweed Spray Trap

There is a specific and common mistake here worth naming. People plant milkweed for monarchs, find it covered in yellow aphids, and reach for something to spray. Ohio State makes the point plainly: insecticide applications aimed at oleander aphids will also take out the monarch caterpillars the milkweed was planted for in the first place, and the same goes for the queens. It is true of insecticidal soaps and oils too, which kill on contact and do not distinguish between an aphid, a butterfly egg, a lacewing larva, or the hover fly larva sitting in the middle of the colony.

We have never sprayed our milkweed with anything. Illinois Extension describes the pattern we see: natural enemies can eventually even the playing field and achieve fairly good control over time. The word "eventually" is doing real work in that sentence. If a colony gets truly out of hand on one plant, the low-tech options are pruning off the affected stem tip or knocking them off with a stream of water. We mostly just leave it alone.

Green Lacewings

What they do: the adults are pale green with transparent wings and golden eyes and mostly feed on nectar, pollen, and honeydew, so they pollinate a little and cost the garden nothing. The larvae are the reason to want them. Lacewing larvae are called "aphid lions" and Xerces reports they can consume up to 400 aphids each week, taking aphids, mites, thrips, scale, and soft-bodied larvae with long curved jaws. They are also one of the few predators that will take oleander aphids despite the chemical defense.

The easiest sign you have them is the eggs. A female lays each egg on top of a thin silk stalk, so you get a row of tiny white pins standing straight up off a leaf. Those stalks keep the eggs out of reach of ants, and out of reach of the first larvae to hatch, since lacewing larvae will eat each other given the chance. Every one we find gets left exactly where it is.

Lady Beetles

What they do: aphid control, and the larvae eat considerably more than the adults do. A lady beetle larva is dark, elongated, slightly spiny, and looks more like a tiny alligator than anything you would call a ladybug, which is why they get squashed by well-meaning gardeners constantly. If you find one on a plant with aphids, leave it alone.

We have two out here worth telling apart. The native twice-stabbed ladybug is black with two red spots, the reverse of what most people picture, and this group is known for working scale insects and mealybugs as well as aphids, which is a slightly different job than the standard aphid specialists. The Asian lady beetle (Harmonia axyridis) is the invasive counterpart, highly variable in color and spot count, and the one that turns up indoors in fall. Both eat aphids and we are removing neither.

Parasitoid Wasps

What they do: internal, self-replicating pest control. Most are smaller than a grain of rice. A female lays an egg inside a living aphid, the larva develops inside it, and it leaves behind a swollen tan or bronze shell called a mummy with a neat round exit hole. Each one that emerges goes and finds more aphids.

If you look at an aphid colony and see individuals that are puffy, discolored, and stuck in place while the rest are moving, those are mummies. It is the clearest free evidence of biological control happening on a plant.

Rove Beetles

What they do: soil-level predation on the things that damage roots and seedlings. Rove beetles hunt aphids, mites, fungus gnat larvae, thrips pupae, and other soft-bodied larvae down in the top layer of soil and leaf litter, which is a layer almost nothing else on this list touches. The family also includes species that work carrion and decaying matter, so they do decomposition work alongside the hunting.

Ours showed up on the back porch with its back end curled up over its body like a scorpion, which is a pure bluff. No stinger, no venom. It curls up to spook birds. It stayed calm for about five minutes, let itself be moved into the garden on a stick, and then flew off.

Container growing helps this group specifically. Because we never till, the soil in every pot stays structurally intact season after season, which is exactly what soil-dwelling predators need. Same reason we keep leaf litter and a pallet stack. Eastern Eyed Click Beetle

What it does: the adults are mostly harmless and spectacular. The larvae are the useful part, living in rotting wood where they hunt wood-boring grubs, so they are simultaneously pest control and part of the crew turning dead wood back into soil.

The adult is large and mottled black and white with two enormous false eyespots on the pronotum that make it look like something much bigger is staring at you. That is defense, not eyesight. The click is real: flipped onto its back, it snaps a hinge between its thorax segments, producing an audible click and launching itself into the air to right itself. One more argument for leaving a pallet stack alone.

The Flower Beetles

A beetle on a flower is not automatically a predator, and that is fine, because beetle pollination is the oldest form of pollination there is. These three are moving pollen as a side effect of eating it, and they visit flowers on schedules and in weather that bees skip.

  • Delta flower scarab (Trigonopeltastes delta). Pollen and nectar feeder, named for the yellow triangle on its pronotum. It mimics a stinging wasp for protection while being completely harmless.
  • Bumble flower beetle (Euphoria inda). Flies with its wing covers shut and buzzes like a fuzzy bumblebee, a mimicry that lets it feed in the open. An accidental but real pollinator.
  • Flower jewel beetle (Acmaeodera sp.). Elytra fused shut, so it flies on hindwings alone and holds a bee-like outline in the air. Found on the plains coreopsis, feeding and moving pollen.

The Frogs

What they do: volume. Blanchard's cricket frog (Acris blanchardi) and the southern leopard frog (Lithobates sphenocephalus) both eat large numbers of small insects around the damp edges of the garden, including things at ground level that the spiders miss. They are also an indicator. Amphibians absorb through their skin and are sensitive to pesticide exposure, so frogs settling into a yard is a reasonable sign the yard is clean.

Everything Else These Plants Bring In

Our log is what Mandi has actually photographed, mostly during daylight, mostly within arm's reach of a camera. That is a fraction of what is out here. A planting like this in North Texas supports a far longer list, and being honest about the gap is more useful than pretending the log is complete.

The Night Shift

Moths outnumber butterflies by a wide margin almost everywhere and most fly after dark, which makes this the biggest blind spot in our whole log. It is also a significant amount of unrecognized pollination, since night-blooming and pale flowers are generally being worked by moths while everyone is asleep.

Hawk moths and sphinx moths (family Sphingidae) are the ones most likely working our flowers at dusk. The white-lined sphinx (Hyles lineata) is common across Texas and hovers at tubular flowers exactly the way a hummingbird does, with a proboscis long enough to reach nectar in flowers almost nothing else can service. That makes it the pollinator for the deep tubular blooms in our garden after the hummingbirds go to roost.

Hummingbird clearwing moth (Hemaris sp.). This one we have seen, early in the season. It is a sphinx moth that flies in daylight, with clear windows in its wings and a furry body, and it hovers and feeds so much like a hummingbird that people argue about what they just watched. Same deep-flower pollination job, done in daylight. We have kept ours at genus level rather than guessing between the two similar species.

Hornworms on the tomatoes. Tomato and tobacco hornworms (Manduca sp.) are sphinx moth caterpillars, and on eight cherry tomato plants in Texas they are close to inevitable. There is a specific thing to check before you do anything about one. If a hornworm is covered in small white cocoons that look like grains of rice standing up off its back, leave it exactly where it is. Those are braconid wasp cocoons. Texas Master Gardeners explain that a tiny female wasp laid eggs under the hornworm's skin, the larvae fed inside it, and they have chewed out to pupate. That hornworm is finished, and the wasps emerging from it will go find the rest of them. Killing it kills your best hornworm control.

Milkweed tussock moth (Euchaetes egle) is a milkweed specialist whose caterpillars are tufted in black, orange, and white and feed in groups on older leaves, generally leaving the new growth the monarchs want.

Caterpillars in general are worth reframing. They are the single most important food source for nesting songbirds, which need soft-bodied protein to raise a clutch. A garden full of caterpillars is a garden that can support birds, and those birds then spend all day removing insects from your plants. Chewed leaves are the entry fee.

If you want to see what your night shift looks like, leave a porch light on near the garden and check the wall under it, or hang a white sheet with a light behind it for an hour after dark. Both are free.

Predators We Have Seen or Expect

Mantidflies (family Mantispidae). We have had these out here, and they are one of the strangest insects in any garden. A mantidfly looks like the front half of a praying mantis welded onto a lacewing, with the same folding raptorial forelegs used the same way. It is not a mantis. Mantidflies are neuropterans, actual relatives of the lacewings. The adults are general predators of small insects and take nectar at flowers, so they pollinate a little on the side.

The larvae connect straight back to the spider section. Mantidfly larvae in the main subfamily are specialists on spider eggs. A newly hatched larva either finds an egg sac and burrows through the silk, or it waits on vegetation, boards a passing female spider, rides her while feeding on her hemolymph, and slips into the egg sac as she spins it. That makes them one of the few things in the garden regulating spider numbers, which is part of why no single predator group takes over.

Praying mantises. The Carolina mantis (Stagmomantis carolina) is native to Texas and is a top-of-the-heap ambush predator that will take anything it can hold, beneficial insects included. Worth being honest about. A mantis is not targeted pest control, it is an apex predator, and a garden with enough prey to support one is a garden that is working.

Ambush bugs (Phymata sp.), which do on flowers exactly what crab spiders do: sit camouflaged and take flower visitors, including prey much larger than themselves.

The small generalists: minute pirate bugs (Orius), big-eyed bugs (Geocoris), and damsel bugs (family Nabidae). Individually unimpressive, collectively responsible for a large share of thrips, mite, and small caterpillar control in any unsprayed planting. Minute pirate bugs in particular are one of the first predators to show up on a thrips problem.

Ground beetles (family Carabidae), night hunters at soil level that take slugs, cutworms, root maggots, and weed seeds. They shelter under exactly the kind of cover we are leaving in place.

Soldier beetles (family Cantharidae), the soft-bodied beetles that cluster on flower heads. Adults pollinate while feeding on pollen and nectar and take some prey, and the larvae are predators down in the soil and litter. Another two-job insect.

Robber flies (family Asilidae), bristly aerial ambush predators that take other insects on the wing, sometimes larger than themselves, covering the same airspace as the dragonflies at a different scale.

Tachinid flies, which look like oversized bristly house flies and are one of the most important caterpillar parasitoid groups there is. The adults feed at exactly the kind of small umbel flowers our dill, fennel, and cilantro produce, which is one more reason to let herbs bolt.

More Bees and Butterflies Than We Have Logged

Texas has hundreds of native bee species and our list is five. Carpenter bees, longhorn bees, mining bees, small mason bees, and squash bees are all reasonable expectations here. The squash bees in particular should be working the pumpkin and watermelon patch, since they specialize almost entirely on cucurbit flowers, open before dawn, and are usually finished for the morning before most gardeners get outside.

On the butterfly side, fourteen species in one season on a container garden is a good year, and there is room for more. Painted lady, common buckeye, snout butterfly, question mark, red admiral, and additional skippers and sulphurs are all common in this part of Texas. Adding pipevine would likely turn our pipevine swallowtail visitor into a resident, and a senna or partridge pea would do the same for the sulphurs.

The Cicadas

Two cicadas turned up this season and they are easy to mix up. The superb dog-day cicada (Neotibicen superbus) is clean pea-green with a black face mask. The bush cicada (Megatibicen dorsatus) is green cluttered with rust and tan, with a row of chalky white dots down the abdomen.

Cicadas are worth a mention here for one reason: they are food. A single cicada is a large protein package, and it feeds cicada killer wasps, birds, lizards, and anything else that can catch one. They also do soil work, since the nymphs spend years underground and the emergence holes move air and water into the root zone.

The Vertebrates Working the Same Garden

We have hummingbirds, and they are not incidental. The flame acanthus, esperanza, Mexican bush sage, and salvias are all built for them. Hummingbirds are effective pollinators of tubular flowers that most insects cannot reach, and they eat a substantial amount of small insects and spiders, because nectar has no protein in it. They also collect spider silk to bind their nests, so a yard with more spiders is a yard that is easier to nest in.

Beyond that: lizards working the containers and fence line for insects all day, songbirds pulling caterpillars off plants during nesting season, and bats and nighthawks over the yard at dusk taking moths and mosquitoes out of the air. None of them show up in a bug log, and all of them are part of why we do not have a pest problem.

About Those Four Mosquito Bites

Between the two of us, we have taken somewhere around four mosquito bites this entire summer. In North Texas. Standing in a watered garden every single day, often at dawn and dusk with a camera.

We want to be careful with this one, because it is an observation, not an experiment. We did not run a control yard. Here is what we think is actually going on, in order of how much credit each piece probably deserves.

Nothing in the garden holds standing water

This is almost certainly the biggest factor. Container mosquitoes need stagnant water sitting long enough for larvae to develop, and Texas A&M AgriLife Extension entomologists point to containers, buckets, birdbaths, and plant saucers as the classic backyard breeding sites. Every one of our planters drains freely. We do not run saucers under them, and there is no stagnant catch basin anywhere out there. A garden built entirely out of draining containers removes most of the habitat before predators ever get involved.

The predator population is genuinely dense

Orb weaver webs go up across the garden nightly, dragonflies and skimmers patrol the airspace by day, assassin bugs work the foliage, and the frogs work the damp edges. Every one of those is a generalist, so mosquitoes are simply part of what they take. Nothing out here is targeting mosquitoes specifically. There are just a lot of mouths.

We are not killing the predators

This is the part that ties everything together. Broad-spectrum sprays do not distinguish between a mosquito and an orb weaver, an assassin bug, a hover fly larva, or a digger wasp. Spraying resets the predator population every time, and the pests, which reproduce faster, come back first. We have never sprayed anything out there, and after a full season the predator population is the most established it has ever been.

Fair warning on the comparison: our yard, our watering habits, and our neighborhood are specific to us. Yours will be different.

How to Start One of These Yourself

You do not need 19 planters. You need bloom, host plants, shelter, and patience.

  1. Start with three to five large containers. Bigger is better. Large containers hold moisture longer and buffer root temperature through a Texas summer. Make sure every one of them drains.
  2. Plant more than one species per pot. A 25-gallon container can hold a nectar plant, a host plant, and a filler flower without crowding. Dense mixed plantings concentrate prey, and predators go where the food is.
  3. Plant zinnias. If you want butterflies in the first season, this is the shortest path. Fast from seed, blooming all season, and shaped so anything with wings can land and feed.
  4. Plant for succession, not for one big show. Something early like rosemary or a fruit tree for the bees coming out of winter, something mid-season, and something late like mistflower and fall aster for migration.
  5. Add at least one host plant. Dill or parsley for swallowtails, native milkweed for monarchs and queens, passion vine for fritillaries. Nectar feeds the butterflies you have. Host plants make more of them.
  6. Plant small flowers on purpose. Yarrow, dill, fennel, cilantro, and thyme feed the adult hover flies, lacewings, tachinid flies, and parasitoid wasps whose larvae do your pest control. Big showy blooms alone will not hold them.
  7. Throw in a wildflower mix. Variety of flower shape is what broadens the insect community, and a mix does that for a few dollars.
  8. Leave shelter, not just food. A stack of pallets, a brush pile, hollow stems, leaf litter, or an untidy corner gives caterpillars somewhere to pupate and predators somewhere to live between meals. Habitat is half the job and it is the half everybody skips.
  9. Learn what the larvae look like. Hover fly larvae, lacewing larvae, and lady beetle larvae are the three most commonly killed beneficial insects in home gardens, purely because people do not recognize them. Look them up once and you will never squash one again.
  10. Turn the leaves over. Aphid colonies, hover fly larvae, lacewing eggs, and parasitized aphid mummies are all on the undersides and the stem tips. You will not see any of it from standing height.
  11. Look after dark once in a while. A porch light near the garden will show you an entirely different set of residents than the ones you meet at noon.
  12. Water at the soil, not overhead. Containers dry out fast. We use a misting wand for seedlings and go to the root zone for everything established.
  13. Stop spraying. All of it. Including the organic and homemade mixes. They do not distinguish between a pest and a predator either, and on milkweed they take out monarch and queen caterpillars along with the aphids.
  14. Accept some chewed leaves and a few aphids. Predators need prey to stay, and birds need caterpillars. A garden with zero pest damage is a garden with nothing living in it.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between an insect garden and a pollinator garden?

A pollinator garden is planted mainly to feed bees, butterflies, and other adult pollinators. An insect garden goes wider and includes host plants for larvae, small flowers for predatory wasps and hover flies, and undisturbed habitat for spiders and ground predators. Every pollinator garden is part of an insect garden. The reverse is not always true.

What plants actually bring in the most butterfly species?

In our garden, three plants account for most of the fourteen species we have logged. Zinnias pull in almost everything, since the flat open bloom lets a butterfly perch and feed. Mistflower brings in the Queens and both hairstreaks specifically. Vitex works as a large standing nectar source all season. After that, the species that stay rather than visit are the ones whose host plant we grow: milkweed for monarchs and queens, dill and fennel for black swallowtails, passion vine for Gulf fritillaries.

How do you tell a Queen from a Monarch?

A Queen is a deeper chestnut brown with white speckling across the forewings and without the heavy black vein pattern that makes a monarch look stained-glass. Both use milkweed as a host and both carry the same chemical defense from it, which is why looking similar benefits them both. Queens are more of a southern species, so they turn up more reliably in Texas than further north.

What actually eats aphids in a no-spray garden?

Mostly larvae, not adults. Hover fly larvae, lacewing larvae, and lady beetle larvae do the bulk of it, and all three are small enough to miss unless you are looking at the undersides of leaves. Research summarized by the Xerces Society puts a single hover fly larva at as many as 50 aphids per day and lacewing larvae at up to 400 aphids per week. Parasitoid wasps, assassin bugs, minute pirate bugs, and rove beetles work the same problem from other angles.

Are assassin bugs good or bad for a garden?

Good. Texas A&M lists the leafhopper assassin bug as a beneficial insect with no management recommended. They are generalist predators at every life stage, including the nymphs, and they take leafhoppers, aphids, thrips, flies, and small caterpillars using sticky forelegs to hold prey larger than themselves. Two caveats: as generalists they will occasionally take a pollinator, and they bite defensively if handled, so look and do not touch.

What are the yellow aphids on my milkweed, and should I spray them?

They are oleander aphids (Aphis nerii), non-native, and they pull toxic compounds out of the milkweed sap into their own bodies as defense. We do not spray them, for a specific reason: insecticides applied to milkweed kill monarch and queen caterpillars and eggs along with the aphids, and that applies to insecticidal soaps and oils too, since they kill on contact. Extension sources note natural enemies generally bring the numbers down over time. If a colony gets extreme, prune the affected stem tip or knock them off with water.

If I stop spraying, will pests destroy my plants?

Sometimes you will lose a plant. We want to be honest about that rather than promise it always works out. There is an adjustment period where pest numbers rise before predators catch up, and the right predator can take anywhere from a week to a month to find the problem. Most of the time the damage stays cosmetic and something shows up to handle it. Occasionally it does not, and a plant goes down. We would still rather lose one plant than spray, because spraying takes out the predators that would have protected everything else, and then you are starting over every season instead of building something that works on its own.

What is the single best plant to start with?

If you want the biggest return from one plant, put in a vitex. It is the heaviest draw in our entire garden, it is a tree so it works year after year, and cutting the spent spring flower spikes off immediately buys you a second bloom. After that, anything in the bee balm family (Monarda) is worth a spot, because those shallow accessible flowers feed small native bees and short-tongued beneficial wasps that the standard nursery plants leave out. For fast results from seed in a single season, zinnias are hard to beat, and adding dill or parsley alongside gets you caterpillars instead of just visitors.

Do I need a big yard to grow one?

No. Fourteen butterfly species turned up in a container garden on a suburban lot. Container gardening works on a patio, a balcony, or a driveway, and extension programs recommend containers specifically for limited space, poor soil, and limited mobility. A few large pots of zinnias, dill, and native milkweed will pull in pollinators and the predators that follow them.

Are the spiders and wasps in an insect garden dangerous?

The overwhelming majority are not interested in you. Solitary wasps like cicada killers, digger wasps, and mud daubers are not defending a colony and rarely sting people. Orb weavers and jumping spiders are shy. Use normal caution with venomous species like black widows, which favor dark enclosed spaces with a lip or overhang, so check under pot rims and inside stored containers before reaching in. We relocate rather than kill, because removing a predator does not remove the insects it was eating.

Does an insect garden actually reduce mosquitoes?

It helps, but eliminating standing water does far more. Dragonflies and spiders genuinely eat mosquitoes, and mosquito control agencies are clear that predators alone do not reliably control mosquito populations. The most effective thing you can do is make sure nothing in your yard holds water for more than a few days.

Final Thoughts

The thing that surprised us most was how little work any of this turned out to be. We planted more flowers, we stopped interfering, and the garden built its own pest control department. The orb weavers took the night airspace and the dragonflies took the day. The assassin bugs took the foliage. The digger wasps took the caterpillars and grasshoppers. And when the aphids finally hit the milkweed hard, we went out to look and found hover fly larvae already sitting in the middle of the colonies, doing a job nobody assigned them.

Fourteen butterfly species showed up on their own. None of them were released, purchased, or introduced by us. We planted the food and the host plants, left the shelter alone, and they found it.

The longer we do this, the more we realize how much we are still not seeing. Our list is what one person with a camera caught in daylight. The night shift, the soil level, and everything smaller than a grain of rice are all running at the same time.
