II. PRODUCT-SPECIFIC SAFETY INFORMATION

A. STAINLESS STEEL REUSABLE GROW MEDIUM

Material Composition

Our stainless steel reusable grow medium is manufactured using 316-grade stainless steel (also known as marine-grade stainless steel), selected for its superior corrosion resistance and suitability for high-moisture growing environments. We maintain supplier certifications for material specifications on file.

⚠️ SHARP EDGE WARNING - HANDLE WITH EXTREME CARE

THIS PRODUCT CONTAINS INHERENTLY SHARP EDGES THAT POSE A SIGNIFICANT RISK OF CUTS, LACERATIONS, OR PUNCTURE INJURIES IF NOT HANDLED PROPERLY.

REQUIRED SAFETY PRECAUTIONS:

  • Wear protective cut-resistant gloves when handling, cleaning, installing, or moving the medium
  • Keep fingers away from edges at all times
  • Store in a safe location away from areas where accidental contact may occur
  • Never handle carelessly or without attention to edge locations
  • Exercise extreme caution during all cleaning and maintenance procedures
  • Handle over a stable surface to prevent dropping
  • Keep away from face and body during handling

INJURY RISK: Cuts from stainless steel can be deep and may require medical attention. Even minor contact with edges can result in injury.

Inspection & Maintenance

INSPECT BEFORE EACH USE. Immediately discontinue use if the stainless steel medium shows any of the following:

  • Excessive sharpness beyond normal manufacturing edges
  • Warping, bending, or structural damage
  • Rust, corrosion, or discoloration (though rare with 316-grade steel)
  • Loose pieces, fragments, or separation of materials
  • New sharp points or edges created by damage
  • Any condition that increases risk of injury

Frequency of Inspection: Inspect before every use, after cleaning, and after any accidental drops or impacts.

Prohibited Modifications

DO NOT CUT, BEND, GRIND, WELD, OR RESHAPE THIS PRODUCT. Any modification:

  • Significantly increases risk of injury
  • May compromise structural integrity and corrosion resistance
  • Voids any responsibility on the part of On The Grow, LLC for resulting damages or injuries
  • May create additional sharp edges or hazardous conditions
  • May introduce contaminants unsuitable for food contact

This product is sold at its manufactured size only. Do not attempt to resize or modify.

Children Safety Warning

⚠️ NOT FOR USE BY OR NEAR CHILDREN. Due to sharp edges, this product must not be handled by children under any circumstances. Adult supervision is mandatory if this product is used in any area accessible to children.

Keep out of reach of children and pets.

First Aid for Cuts

If injury occurs:

  1. Immediately cease handling the product
  2. Apply direct pressure to stop bleeding
  3. Clean wound thoroughly with soap and water
  4. Seek medical attention for deep cuts, puncture wounds, or if bleeding does not stop
  5. Follow up with healthcare provider if signs of infection develop

B. SILICONE REUSABLE GROW MEDIUM

Material Composition

Our silicone reusable grow medium is manufactured using virgin, food-grade silicone with an internal fiberglass reinforcement core designed to provide structure, flexibility, and durability.

The silicone material has been independently third-party tested by our supplier and certified for FDA compliance for food-contact applications under normal use conditions.

Important Material Information:

  • Outer layer: Food-grade silicone polymer (polysiloxane)
  • Internal reinforcement: Fiberglass mesh core
  • Purpose of reinforcement: Provides structural support and dimensional stability

⚠️ FIBERGLASS EXPOSURE WARNING

CRITICAL: The internal fiberglass reinforcement core is designed to remain completely encased within the silicone material. IF THE SILICONE LAYER BECOMES DAMAGED, TORN, OR COMPROMISED, FIBERGLASS FIBERS MAY BECOME EXPOSED.

Exposure to fiberglass fibers can cause:

  • Skin irritation and itching
  • Eye irritation
  • Respiratory irritation if fibers become airborne
  • Discomfort from embedded fibers in skin

IF FIBERGLASS BECOMES EXPOSED:

  • Immediately discontinue use of the product
  • Do NOT continue using a damaged product
  • Dispose of the product properly (see disposal section)
  • Wash hands thoroughly after handling
  • If fiberglass contacts skin: wash with soap and cool water, pat dry gently (do not rub)
  • If fiberglass irritation persists, seek medical attention
  • Never use a product with exposed fiberglass for growing food

This is the primary reason why regular inspection and proper maintenance are critical.

Material Characteristics & Wear

Silicone is a synthetic polymer (siloxane-based, containing silicon and oxygen) and is chemically distinct from traditional carbon-based plastics. However, like any reusable material, silicone products may experience gradual wear, surface changes, or degradation over time depending on:

  • Frequency and intensity of cutting or trimming
  • Cleaning methods and chemical exposure
  • Environmental factors (UV exposure, temperature extremes, humidity)
  • Physical abrasion or rough handling
  • Age and cumulative use cycles
  • Contact with sharp objects or tools

While silicone degradation differs chemically from traditional plastic breakdown, proper care, gentle handling, and appropriate cleaning methods help maintain product integrity and extend usable life.

Typical lifespan: With proper care, silicone grow medium typically lasts 6-18 months of regular use (2-4 growing cycles per month). Replace sooner if signs of wear appear.

Allergies & Sensitivities

While rare, some individuals may have sensitivities or allergic reactions to silicone materials. If you experience skin irritation, rashes, or other reactions when handling this product:

  • Discontinue use immediately
  • Wash affected area with soap and water
  • Consult with a healthcare provider if symptoms persist
  • Consider alternative growing mediums

Safe Cutting & Modification Guidelines

If you need to trim or customize the size of your silicone medium:

  • Use sharp, clean scissors or cutting tools designed for silicone materials
  • Cut slowly and deliberately on a stable, flat surface
  • Avoid excessive force or sawing motions that may tear the material
  • Keep fingers clear of cutting path at all times
  • Cut in well-lit area where you can clearly see the material
  • Inspect cut edges immediately to ensure clean cuts with no tears
  • Smooth any rough cut edges if necessary
  • After cutting, inspect to ensure no fiberglass is exposed at cut edges

Modification is performed entirely at your own risk. We recommend purchasing the size that best fits your needs rather than cutting when possible.

NEVER cut or trim if:

  • The material is wet or slippery
  • You see any signs of existing damage or wear
  • The fiberglass core is visible or exposed

Inspection & Maintenance

INSPECT BEFORE EACH USE AND AFTER EVERY CLEANING. Immediately discontinue use if the silicone medium shows any of the following:

🔴 CRITICAL - IMMEDIATE REPLACEMENT REQUIRED:

  • Tears, splits, or holes that expose internal fiberglass reinforcement
  • Visible fiberglass fibers poking through silicone surface
  • Separation or delamination of silicone layers

🟡 WARNING - REPLACE SOON:

  • Excessive wear, thinning, or surface deterioration
  • Persistent tackiness or sticky feel that doesn't resolve with cleaning
  • Discoloration that doesn't clean off
  • Loss of flexibility (feels stiff or brittle)
  • Persistent odors that remain after sanitization
  • Mold or bacterial growth that returns immediately after deep cleaning

🟢 MONITOR CLOSELY:

  • Minor surface scratches (if no fiberglass visible)
  • Slight discoloration from mineral deposits (cleanable)
  • Normal wear patterns from use

When in doubt, replace the product. The cost of replacement is far less than the risk of fiberglass exposure or crop contamination.

Cleaning & Care Recommendations

Proper cleaning and sanitization extends product life, maintains hygiene, and ensures safe growing conditions for edible crops.

ROUTINE CLEANING (After Each Growing Cycle)

  1. Remove debris: Shake off loose plant material and roots
  2. Rinse thoroughly: Use warm (not hot) water to remove remaining debris
  3. Wash with soap: Use mild dish soap and warm water with a soft brush or sponge
  4. Clean perforations: Ensure all holes and textured areas are clean
  5. Rinse completely: Rinse under running water until no soap residue remains
  6. Shake excess water: Remove as much water as possible
  7. Air dry completely: Hang or lay flat to dry for 2-4 hours minimum

DEEP SANITIZATION (Recommended Weekly or Between Different Crop Types)

Option 1: Boiling Water Method (Most Effective)

  • Bring a large pot of water to rolling boil
  • Fully submerge silicone medium for 5-10 minutes
  • Remove with tongs or heat-resistant utensils
  • Allow to cool completely
  • Inspect for any damage that may have occurred
  • Air dry completely before storage or reuse

Option 2: Dishwasher Method

  • Place on top rack of dishwasher only
  • Run full hot-water cycle with heated dry (150°F+ recommended)
  • Do not use harsh detergents or rinse aids
  • Allow to cool and air dry completely if needed
  • Inspect for damage after washing

Option 3: Hydrogen Peroxide Method

  • Mix 1 part 3% hydrogen peroxide with 3 parts water in a container
  • Fully submerge medium for 10-15 minutes
  • Rinse thoroughly under running water
  • Air dry completely (2-4 hours)

⚠️ WHAT NOT TO USE:

❌ Bleach or chlorine-based cleaners - Can degrade silicone and leave harmful residues ❌ Abrasive scrubbers - Steel wool, hard brushes, scouring pads (can damage silicone surface)
❌ Harsh chemical cleaners - Ammonia, oven cleaners, or non-food-safe products
❌ High-pressure washers - Can damage silicone or force water under layers
❌ Excessive heat - Do not expose to temperatures above 400°F (can damage material)

Proper Storage

Storage is critical to prevent mold, odors, and material degradation:

  • Store ONLY when completely dry (2-4 hours air-dry time typical, longer in humid conditions)
  • Keep in cool, dry location away from direct sunlight
  • Store flat or loosely rolled; avoid tight creasing or folding
  • Do NOT store in sealed plastic bags (can trap moisture and promote mold)
  • Ensure good air circulation around stored product
  • Keep away from heat sources, chemicals, and strong odors
  • Store separately from sharp objects that could puncture or tear

For long-term storage (between growing seasons):

  • Clean and sanitize thoroughly
  • Ensure 100% dry (consider extra drying time)
  • Store in breathable fabric bag or open container
  • Check monthly for any signs of mold or odor
  • Re-sanitize before returning to use

When to Replace

Discontinue use and replace the silicone medium immediately if you observe:

🔴 SAFETY HAZARDS (Replace Immediately):

  • Any visible fiberglass reinforcement exposed

  • Material feels brittle or breaks easily

🟡 HYGIENE CONCERNS (Replace Promptly):

  • Persistent odors that do not resolve with deep sanitization
  • Mold that returns immediately after cleaning
  • Surface feels sticky, tacky, or degraded
  • Discoloration that cannot be cleaned

🟢 PERFORMANCE ISSUES (Consider Replacement):

  • Significant loss of flexibility
  • Extensive surface wear or thinning
  • Product no longer holds shape properly
  • Difficulty cleaning or maintaining

Recommended replacement schedule: Every 6-18 months depending on frequency of use, or sooner if any of the above conditions appear.

Environmental & Chemical Exposure Warnings

Avoid exposing silicone grow medium to:

  • Direct sunlight or UV light for extended periods (can cause degradation)
  • Petroleum-based products or solvents

  • Strong acids or bases
  • Ozone or ozone-generating equipment without the use of water

If product is accidentally exposed to chemicals:

  • Rinse immediately with copious amounts of water
  • Clean thoroughly with soap and water
  • Inspect carefully for any damage or changes
  • If uncertain about safety, discontinue use and replace

Disposal

When it's time to dispose of your used silicone grow medium:

❌ Do NOT place in recycling (silicone is not recyclable in most municipal programs)
✓ Place in regular trash/landfill waste
✓ Consider contacting local waste management for silicone disposal options
✓ Some areas may have special silicone recycling programs - check locally
✓ Ensure product is clean and dry before disposal

Note: Silicone does not biodegrade but is considered relatively inert in landfills.

Children Safety Warning

⚠️ NOT A TOY - NOT FOR USE BY CHILDREN.

This product is a growing tool and must not be used by children. While less hazardous than stainless steel, children could:

  • Damage the product and expose fiberglass
  • Put pieces in their mouth (choking hazard)

Adult supervision is required at all times if this product is used in areas accessible to children to prevent choking hazards, misuse, or accidents.

III. NUTRITIONAL CONTENT & NUTRIENT DENSITY DISCLAIMER

This disclaimer applies to all reusable grow medium products (silicone and stainless steel) sold by On The Grow, LLC.

No Nutritional Claims

On The Grow, LLC makes NO claims, representations, or warranties regarding the nutritional content, nutrient density, vitamin levels, mineral content, or health benefits of crops grown using our reusable grow medium products.

We do not claim that crops grown on our products will be:

  • More nutrient-dense than crops grown in soil
  • Less nutrient-dense than crops grown in soil
  • Equal in nutrient density to crops grown in soil or other growing methods
  • Higher or lower in specific vitamins, minerals, or other nutrients
  • Healthier, safer, or more beneficial than crops grown using other methods

Inert Growing Medium

Our reusable grow mediums (both silicone and stainless steel) are inert materials. This means:

  • They do NOT add nutrients to your crops
  • They do NOT remove or reduce nutrients from your crops
  • They serve only as a physical support structure for seed germination and root development
  • They do not interact chemically with seeds, roots, or water in ways that affect nutritional content

The medium itself does not contribute to or detract from the nutritional value of the crops grown on it.

Factors That Affect Nutrient Density

Nutrient density and nutritional content of microgreens and sprouts are influenced by numerous factors entirely outside our control and unrelated to the growing medium itself, including but not limited to:

SEED-RELATED FACTORS:

  • Seed variety and genetics
  • Seed quality and freshness
  • Seed storage conditions before purchase
  • Natural variation between seed batches

ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS:

  • Light quality, intensity, spectrum, and duration
  • Temperature during growing
  • Humidity levels
  • Air circulation and quality
  • Geographic location and altitude

WATER-RELATED FACTORS:

  • Water quality and mineral content
  • pH levels of water
  • Presence or absence of chlorine, fluoride, or other additives

FERTILIZER & NUTRITION INPUTS:

  • Type of fertilizer used (if any)
  • Fertilizer concentration and application method
  • Nutrient solution composition
  • Timing of fertilizer application

GROWING PRACTICES:

  • Harvest timing (days to maturity)
  • Growing cycle length
  • Seed density/spacing
  • Sanitation and growing conditions

POST-HARVEST FACTORS:

  • Storage conditions after harvest
  • Time between harvest and consumption
  • Washing and preparation methods
  • Cooking or processing (if applicable)

Because these factors vary significantly from grower to grower, location to location, and crop to crop, nutritional content will vary regardless of growing medium used.

General Information About Microgreens (Not Our Claims)

Based on publicly available research and scientific studies conducted by third parties (not by On The Grow, LLC):

  • Microgreens are generally considered to be nutrient-dense when compared to mature vegetables of the same variety, primarily because they are harvested at a very young stage when nutrient concentrations are high
  • Studies have shown that certain microgreens can contain higher levels of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants than their mature counterparts
  • Hydroponic growing methods (which can include growing on inert mediums with nutrient solutions) have been shown in some studies to produce crops with comparable or sometimes higher nutrient density than soil-grown crops, depending on growing conditions
  • Controlled environment growing (using grow lights, controlled temperature, etc.) can sometimes produce more consistent nutritional results than outdoor growing, according to some research
